Today's teaching will be about why Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan.
Firstly, I just want to start off by saying that it is very important to say 'The month of Ramadan' instead of 'Ramadan' because Ramadan is believed to be one of Allah's (99 names), so whenever you are talking about the holy month remember to say 'The month of Ramadan'.

Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan as it is what Allah has commanded them to do. It is written in the Quran -
O you who believe! Observing As-Sawm (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (pious)”
[al-Baqarah 2:183]
Fasting is also believed to be one of the acts that Allah has prescribed Muslims to do as a test in their faith and see if they will obey. It helps Muslims remind themselves of the poor who rarely get to eat during the day whilst we just try to eat as much as we can and even sometimes waste food not thinking of those people that don't have any.
During the month of Ramadan many Muslims attempt to complete the whole Quran which has 604 pages and 30 chapters, so reading one chapter a day (which is 21 pages) you can easily finish the Quran in the month of Ramadan as you fast for 30 days.
The month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims fast from dawn until sunset and refrain from eating, drinking, smoking etc. Ramadan is a lunar month, it begins about 11 days earlier each year. During a Muslim's life, Ramadan will fall both during winter months, when the days are short, and summer months, when the days are long and the fast is more difficult. Also, during the month the doors of the heaven is open so reading Quran and dua's and doing good deeds will help allah accept us.
